Measuring your ring size: How to find your perfect size (with chart)

Updated: 5 days ago

You've fallen in love with a ring, but you're unsure which size to order? Don't worry – measuring your ring size is easier than you think. In this guide, I'll show you two reliable methods for determining your size at home. Accurate measuring is especially important for handmade jewelry: I forge my made-to-order rings individually for you, so subsequent size adjustments are usually not possible.

Method 1: Measure a suitable ring

The simplest method, if you already have a well-fitting ring:

  1. Choose a ring that fits the desired finger perfectly.

  2. Place it on a ruler or – even more precisely – measure it with calipers.

  3. Measure the inner diameter in millimeters, i.e., from inner edge to inner edge.

  4. Compare the value with the table below.

Important: Make sure you measure the inner diameter, not the outer one – otherwise you'll quickly end up a whole size off.

Method 2: Measure finger circumference with thread or paper strips

Don't have a suitable ring handy? Then measure your finger directly:

  1. Cut a thin strip of paper or use a thread (not stretchy!).

  2. Place it snugly, but not tightly, around the widest part of your finger.

  3. Mark the point where the ends overlap.

  4. Measure the length to the mark with a ruler – that's your finger circumference in millimeters.

Caution if you have strong finger joints: The ring must fit over the knuckle. In this case, also measure the knuckle and choose a size in between.

Tip: The circumference in millimeters corresponds approximately to the ring size commonly used in Switzerland and the EU (e.g., circumference 54 mm = size 54).

5 professional tips for the perfect fit

  1. Measure in the evening. Fingers are thinner in the morning and in cold weather, and slightly thicker in the evening and in warm weather. The most reliable measurement is taken in the evening at normal room temperature.

  2. Take several measurements. Repeat the measurement on two or three different days – this will even out any fluctuations.

  3. Wider rings need more space. A wide band fits more snugly than a narrow one. For my wider designs, like the Beaded Goddess Ring, I recommend ordering half to a full size larger. This applies to all my Goddess Rings. Rings with a thin band, like the Stacking Rings, on the other hand, should simply be ordered in the size you measured.

  4. When in doubt, choose the larger size. If you're exactly between two sizes, choose the larger one. A slightly loose ring is more comfortable to wear than one that pinches.

  5. Every finger is different. The size of your right ring finger says nothing about your left – always measure the finger on which you intend to wear the ring.

Unsure? Just ask me!

Still unsure after measuring? Send me a message – together we'll find your size. With some of my designs, such as the Stacking Rings , I can also increase the ring size by up to one size by giving the band a hammered texture.

And now: Have fun browsing for your new favorite ring ! I handcraft all my jewelry from 925 sterling silver here on the beautiful Lake Walen.
